What is the active
ingredient in Sensodyne toothpaste for the treatment of dentin
hypersensitivity?
There are two types of Sensodyne toothpaste in Canada: Sensodyne-F
formulations and Sensodyne Original formula. These two variants
utilize different active ingredients for the treatment of dentin
hypersensitivity.
Sensodyne-F contains potassium nitrate 5% w/w,
as the desensitizing agent, and also contains fluoride for ongoing
caries prevention. Potassium nitrate inhibits repolarization of
sensory nerve endings, thereby reducing the pain response to stimulation.
The Sensodyne-F formulations include:
- Sensodyne-F Fresh Mint
- Sensodyne-F Whitening plus Tartar Fighting
- Sensodyne-F Ultra Fresh
- Sensodyne-F Revitalizing Whitening
- Sensodyne-F Brilliant Whitening
- Sensodyne-F Cool Mint Gel
- Sensodyne-F Baking Soda Clean
Sensodyne Original
formula contains strontium chloride 10% w/w. Strontium chloride
occludes the dentinal tubules, thereby reducing fluid flow and
dentin hypersensitivity pain. This formula does not contain fluoride.
Which type of fluoride
is in Sensodyne-F toothpastes, and what is its concentration?
All Sensodyne-F toothpastes contain sodium fluoride, the majority
at a level of 0.243% by weight (Sensodyne-F Gel contains sodium
fluoride at a level of 0.24% by weight). The role of fluoride
in the formulations is for ongoing caries prevention. The sensitivity
relief ingredient in Sensodyne toothpaste is either potassium
nitrate (in all Sensodyne-F formulations) or strontium chloride
(in the Sensodyne Original formulation).

dentin hypersensitivity toothpaste reduce the patients’
pain?

What are the directions
for use?
Sensodyne toothpaste is specially formulated to relieve tooth
sensitivity to cold, heat, acids, sweets or contact. Sensitivity
should decrease within 2 weeks, and greater effect develops with
continued use. For best results brush twice a day to build and
maintain the protective barrier, to help prevent the pain from
returning.
Why is it important
for patients to brush with Sensodyne twice a day, everyday?
For best results, desensitizing toothpaste should be used on a
regular basis. Considering the natural outward flow of fluid from
the pulp toward the outer surface of dentin, it is important to
ensure that a sufficient amount of active ingredient is applied,
and over time, accumulates to build a protective barrier. Twice-daily
brushing maintains the barrier, and helps prevent the pain from
coming back (There is no published evidence to support topical
application or “dabbing.”). Dental care professionals
need to instruct the patient before initiating treatment. An ongoing
regimen of regular, twice-daily brushing is the only clinically
supported method of application.
Why shouldn’t
Sensodyne be "dabbed" on?
There is no clinical evidence to support dabbing as an effective
means of application. Sensodyne clinical studies were performed
using brushing as the method of application.
Is Sensodyne safe
to use every day?
Yes. In fact, a dentin hypersensitivity toothpaste is most effective
when used twice daily, to build and maintain the protective barrier.
This helps to prevent the pain from returning. Sensodyne is proud
to be the first dentin hypersensitivity toothpaste to earn the
Canadian Dental Association seal for reducing tooth sensitivity.
Why does Sensodyne
offer eight different formulations?
Offering a variety of formulations helps to increase patient compliance
and meet consumer needs. Desensitizing toothpastes produce the
best results with regular, ongoing brushing. Compliance with this
protocol will be increased if the desensitizing toothpaste offers
a variety of flavors and added benefits, thereby ensuring that
patients have access to their preferred benefits.
With so many different
formulations of Sensodyne, I’m confused about which one
to recommend.
Many dental professionals start by recommending a flavor/benefit
combination most closely representing the dentifrice previously
used by the patient. Sensodyne offers a variety of formulations
to ease this transition and help ensure ongoing compliance with
the twice a day, everyday protocol.
Patients can choose from 8 different formulations:
- Sensodyne-F Fresh Mint
- Sensodyne-F Whitening plus Tartar Fighting
- Sensodyne-F Ultra Fresh
- Sensodyne-F Revitalizing Whitening
- Sensodyne-F Brilliant Whitening
- Sensodyne-F Cool Mint Gel
- Sensodyne-F Baking Soda Clean
- Sensodyne Original
Formula
How abrasive is Sensodyne?
Sensodyne-F formulations are typically 70 to 90 RDA (Relative
Dentin Abrasion index). Sensodyne-F Revitalizing has a higher
index in the range of 100 to 120 RDA, while Sensodyne Original
formula has an abrasion index of 40.
Which Sensodyne formulations do not
contain sodium lauryl sulfate?
The following Sensodyne formulas do
not contain sodium lauryl sulfate: Sensodyne-F Brilliant Whitening
with potassium nitrate, and Sensodyne Original with strontium
chloride.
Do you have a Sensodyne formulation that
does not have fluoride or sodium lauryl sulphate in it?
